Overview
I built this in 2019 and have enjoyed riding it ever since. It was inspired by vintage flat track bikes and custom show bikes, so it’s got a mix of influences. Old race bike looks, with custom decorative details. It’s all bare metal showing off the lead moulding and years of honest, well earned weathering. This is a custom bike for riding! It’s been exhibited in a number of shows (including The Bike Shed Show) and featured in Greasy Kulture magazine.
It’s taxed and tested, starts easy, runs solid, rides light and nimble (I used to commute on it, and it’s great at cutting through traffic). It’s plenty quick, ain’t afraid of a run on the motorway (if you aren’t!) It even gets pretty good gas mileage. I’ve never measured exactly, but even with the small tank, I can go out on big rides into the countryside without worrying about filling up every 5 minutes.
Currently, it’s wearing its ‘dirt racer’ look (number boards instead of lights) but it can switch back to lights with a couple bolts.
-engine. Bullet 500cc. I added upgraded rockers and aluminium push rods. Converted to Amal 900 carb. Right side shift.
-frame. Custom hardtail. You can get off the shelf kits for these, but I made this one to get the compact proportions just right.
-tank, fender, ‘oil’ tank. Peanut tank. stock rear fender, narrowed and shortened. Centre rib, scallops and fins on the ‘oil’ tank are lead molded and bare metal. The ‘oil’ tank is actually the electric box, made from scratch to fit the frame.
-Electrics. Kick start. No battery. Hidden switches. Boyer electric ignition, Lucas alternator and coil. All new and rewired when I built it. Wires run to the dummy oil tank in dummy hard oil lines to keep everything clean. Points/ignition cover is a custom cap with dried flowers set in resin.
-forks. Stock, lowered, shaved lowers, trials top yoke cut down and smoothed.
-wheels/tyres. 19 inch front and back, just like flat track bikes. Fresh set of trials tyres, these are real sticky on the road and great if you want to play in the dirt.
-brakes. Twin leading shoe front works great. Rear brake, I made a brake crossover so it’s on the right with the shifter, like vintage flat track bikes. Makes for an interesting ride (easy once you’re used to it) and allows your left leg free to slide if you fancied racing some flat track!
